Aging-in-Place Renovation Guide for Vancouver Homes
Renovating Your Vancouver Home for Aging-in-Place
With Metro Vancouver’s aging population and high cost of senior care facilities, aging-in-place renovation has become a priority for many homeowners in their 50s and 60s. Smart modifications now can enable independent living for decades — at a fraction of the cost of care facilities ($8,000–$15,000/month).
Essential Aging-in-Place Modifications
Bathroom Safety
- Walk-in or curbless shower: Eliminates the biggest fall risk in the home. Add fold-down shower bench and handheld showerhead. Cost: $8,000–$25,000.
- Grab bars: Properly installed (blocking in wall) grab bars beside toilet and in shower. Cost: $500–$1,500.
- Comfort-height toilet: 17–19 inch height vs standard 15 inches — significantly easier for people with mobility limitations. Cost: $400–$900 including installation.
- Non-slip flooring: Matte porcelain (R10+ slip rating) or textured LVP. Cost: $3,000–$8,000 for a bathroom.
Mobility and Access
- Zero-step entry: Ramp or grade changes to eliminate exterior steps. Cost: $3,000–$12,000.
- Wider doorways (36 inches): Allows walker and wheelchair access. Cost: $1,000–$3,000 per doorway.
- Stair lift: For two-storey homes. Cost: $3,500–$8,000 installed.
- Main-floor bedroom: Convert dining room or den to bedroom. Cost: $8,000–$25,000.
BC Government Support
