Bathroom Renovation Timeline Vancouver: How Long Each Phase Takes
A mid-range bathroom renovation in Metro Vancouver takes 4–7 weeks from contract signing to completion. Here’s what happens each phase.
Week 1–2: Pre-Construction
Contract signed, permit submitted (if required for plumbing relocation — 2–4 weeks at COV), tile and fixtures ordered. Standard in-stock tile can be ordered with 1-week lead time. Custom or imported tile: 4–8 weeks. Frameless glass shower enclosure: 2–4 weeks from template to delivery. If permit is needed, demo cannot begin until permit is in hand.
Week 3: Demo
Existing tile, fixtures, vanity, and shower/tub removed. Substrate assessed for moisture damage (additional scope if moisture is found). Cement board or waterproofing membrane installed in wet areas. Plumbing rough-in adjusted if fixtures are relocating. City rough-in inspection if permit is required.
Week 4: Tile and Framing
Floor tile installed first (2 days including grout cure time). Wall tile in shower/tub area (2–3 days including multiple mortar applications and cure time). Tile selection is the most time-sensitive item — must be on-site before tile phase begins.
Week 5: Fixtures and Finishes
Vanity delivered and installed. Toilet installed. Shower glass templated (if frameless — 1 week fabrication lead). Lighting fixtures installed. Electrical trim-out (GFCI outlets, exhaust fan). Paint touchups.
Week 6: Glass and Punch List
Frameless shower enclosure installed. Mirrors hung. Accessories (towel bars, toilet paper holder, robe hooks) installed. Final clean. Walk-through punch list with homeowner. Permit closed. Warranty certificate issued.
What Causes Bathroom Renovation Delays?
Most bathroom delays come from: (1) out-of-stock tile requiring reorder (always order 15% extra), (2) tile installer availability — good tile setters book 2–4 weeks in advance, (3) frameless glass lead time if custom sizing required, (4) permit processing if plumbing is being relocated.
