EV Charger Installation for Vancouver Homes: Costs & Requirements
Installing a Home EV Charger in Vancouver
With BC’s commitment to all-electric vehicle sales by 2035 and strong EV adoption in Metro Vancouver, home EV charging infrastructure is increasingly a standard part of renovation planning. This guide covers costs, permit requirements, and what to install.
EV Charger Types and Costs
| Type | Charging Speed | Install Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 (120V outlet) | 8km range/hour | $200–$500 | PHEVs, overnight trickle |
| Level 2 (240V, 32A) | 30–50km range/hour | $800–$1,800 | Most EVs, standard home use |
| Level 2 (240V, 48A+) | 50–80km range/hour | $1,200–$2,500 | Long-range EVs, frequent charging |
| Smart EV Charger (with scheduling) | Same as above | $2,000–$4,000 | TOU rate optimization, solar integration |
Electrical Requirements
A Level 2 EV charger requires a dedicated 240V circuit. Older Vancouver homes (pre-1960) often have 100-amp panels that may need upgrading ($1,800–$3,500) to accommodate an EV charger alongside other electrical loads. Modern 200-amp panels can typically accommodate a 40-48A EV circuit without upgrades.
Strata EV Charging
Strata EV charging requires both strata and electrical permits. BC’s Strata Property Act was amended to make it easier for strata owners to install EV chargers — stratas cannot unreasonably deny applications. BC Hydro’s EV charger program provides rebates for multi-unit buildings.
Rebates
BC Hydro offers a $350 rebate for Level 2 EV charger installation at single-family homes. CleanBC offers additional incentives for smart chargers integrated with solar. Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Infrastructure Program offers rebates for multi-unit buildings.
