Fibreglass vs. Acrylic vs. Cast Iron Bathtubs: Vancouver Guide 2026
The bathtub industry has three dominant materials — fibreglass, acrylic, and cast iron — each at very different price points with genuinely different performance profiles. Here’s what Vancouver homeowners need to know before choosing.
Fibreglass: The entry-level choice — a thin fibreglass shell finished with a gel coat. Lightweight and affordable ($400–$1,200), but the finish scratches, stains, and fades over time. Fibreglass tubs typically last 10–15 years before looking dated. Acceptable for investment properties and rental suites but not recommended for primary bathroom renovations where longevity and aesthetics matter.
Acrylic: A heated and vacuum-formed acrylic sheet reinforced with fibreglass. More durable than fibreglass with a non-porous surface that resists staining and maintains its sheen. Available in freestanding, alcove, drop-in, and corner configurations — the dominant choice for Metro Vancouver bathroom renovations. Acrylic retains heat better than fibreglass, weighs 40–100 lbs, and is compatible with most floor structures. Cost: $600–$3,500+ depending on style and brand. Lifespan: 20–30 years with normal care.
Cast iron: Extremely durable (50–100 year lifespan), exceptional heat retention (stays warm for 45–60 minutes vs. 10–15 minutes for acrylic), and a premium look especially in freestanding clawfoot styles. The major drawbacks: weight (200–500 lbs requires floor reinforcement in older homes) and cost ($1,500–$5,000+ for the tub itself). Cast iron is the luxury choice — appropriate for primary ensuites in heritage homes and high-end renovations where the tub is a centrepiece feature.
