LED vs. Traditional Lighting for Vancouver Home Renovations: What to Know in 2026

If you’re renovating in 2026, the lighting decision is simple: LED everywhere. But the specification details — colour temperature, CRI, dimming compatibility, and fixture choice — matter for achieving beautiful lighting results.

LED vs. Incandescent vs. Halogen: The Numbers

TypeEfficiency (lm/W)LifespanCost per BulbAnnual Energy (per bulb)
Incandescent (60W)15 lm/W1,000 hrs$1–$2$9–$12/yr
Halogen20 lm/W2,000 hrs$3–$6$7–$10/yr
LED (equivalent)80–120 lm/W15,000–25,000 hrs$5–$20$1.50–$2.50/yr

Colour Temperature: The Most Important LED Spec

Colour temperature (Kelvin) determines whether LED lighting looks warm, neutral, or cool:

  • 2700K: Warm white — closest to traditional incandescent. Best for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms. Creates a warm, relaxing ambiance.
  • 3000K: Warm white (slightly crisper) — good for kitchens and bathrooms. Flattering to skin tones and food.
  • 4000K: Neutral white — good for home offices, workshops, laundry rooms. Clear, task-oriented light.
  • 5000K+: Daylight/cool white — commercial and utility spaces. Too harsh for most residential living spaces.

Specify 2700K or 3000K for all living spaces and bathrooms in a Vancouver home renovation.

CRI (Colour Rendering Index): Don’t Ignore This

CRI measures how accurately a light source renders colours relative to natural light (100 = perfect). Specify minimum CRI 90 for living spaces, kitchens, and bathrooms — this makes colours look vibrant and accurate. Many commodity LED fixtures are CRI 80 — acceptable but noticeably less vibrant. CRI 95+ is available in premium fixtures for applications where colour accuracy is critical (artwork, makeup mirrors).

Dimming: Plan the Infrastructure

LED fixtures require LED-compatible dimmers — standard incandescent dimmers cause LEDs to flicker or buzz. Lutron Caséta and Leviton Decora Smart are the leading compatible dimmer systems. Specify LED-compatible dimmers at rough-in and confirm your LED fixtures are listed as dimmable. Non-dimmable LED fixtures + dimmers = flickering and premature LED failure.
