Pocket Door vs. Barn Door: Which is Right for Your Vancouver Renovation?
Space-saving doors are increasingly popular in Vancouver renovations where maximizing usable square footage matters. Pocket doors slide into the wall; barn doors slide along the wall on an exposed track. Both solve the “door swing footprint” problem but work very differently.
Pocket Doors: Invisible When Open
A pocket door slides into a cavity built within the wall framing. When open, it is completely invisible — the full doorway is clear, the wall appears continuous, and no floor space is consumed in any direction.
Where they work best: Bathrooms (ensuites, powder rooms), laundry/pantry closets, between two rooms where full opening is desired. Ideal for small bathrooms in Vancouver condos and suites where standard door swing consumes usable floor space.
Pros: Completely out of the way when open; no floor clearance required; highest privacy (full seal possible); looks built-in and architectural.
Cons: Requires wall cavity at time of construction or renovation — cannot be retrofitted into existing walls without major framing work; no plumbing or electrical can run in the pocket wall; hardware can be harder to access for service; older pocket door hardware can stick or jump the track.
Cost: $800–$2,000 installed (new framing + door + hardware + drywall finish). Significantly more if retrofitting an existing wall.
Barn Doors: A Design Statement
A barn door slides along an exterior track mounted above the door opening. The door hangs in front of the wall surface — when open, it covers the adjacent wall.
Where they work best: Open between a kitchen and dining room; bedroom closets; as a room divider; any location where adjacent wall space is available for the door to slide into.
Pros: Easy to retrofit (no framing required); strong design statement; wide range of door styles available; accessible hardware.
Cons: The door is always visible (even when open, it covers part of an adjacent wall); gaps around the door prevent full sound/privacy sealing; requires clear wall space equal to the door width on the open side; track is exposed and collects dust.
Cost: $600–$2,500 installed (door + hardware kit + installation).
When to Choose Each
| Situation | Choose |
|---|---|
| Small bathroom, maximum clearance needed | Pocket door |
| Retrofit without wall framing work | Barn door |
| Privacy is important (bedroom, ensuite) | Pocket door |
| Design statement, industrial or farmhouse aesthetic | Barn door |
| Closet where open door must be out of way | Either (bifold also viable) |
