Porcelain vs. Ceramic Tile Vancouver: Kitchen & Bathroom Comparison (2026)
Porcelain and ceramic tile look virtually identical on showroom samples — but they perform very differently in high-moisture environments. For Vancouver renovations, choosing the right tile type for each application is important for longevity.
The key difference: Both are clay-based tiles fired in a kiln, but porcelain is fired at higher temperatures and pressed at higher pressure — producing a denser tile with lower water absorption (under 0.5% for porcelain vs. 3–7% for ceramic). This difference is critical for wet applications.
When to use porcelain: Shower floors and walls, bathroom floors, kitchen floors (high traffic), outdoor tile applications (Vancouver’s rain and occasional freeze make porcelain necessary for exterior use), and any tile application where the substrate is subject to moisture. Large-format tiles (600×600mm and above) are almost always porcelain — the density is required to prevent warping and cracking in larger spans.
When ceramic works fine: Kitchen backsplash (not submerged, dries quickly), bathroom walls above the wet zone, fireplace surrounds, and decorative tile applications in dry areas. Ceramic is easier to cut and lighter weight — making it better for some wall applications where weight is a concern.
Cost difference: Ceramic tile is typically $2–$8/sq ft cheaper than comparable porcelain. The installation cost is similar — it’s the tile itself that differs in price. For a 50 sq ft shower, the tile material cost difference is $100–$400 — a relatively minor consideration given the total bathroom renovation budget. VGC recommends porcelain for any moisture-exposed surface regardless of the cost premium.
