Bathroom Layout Options for Vancouver Homes 2025
Bathroom Layout Planning for Vancouver Renovations
The layout — placement of toilet, vanity, shower, and tub — is the most important decision in any bathroom renovation. Getting it right maximizes function in Vancouver’s typically small bathrooms.
Standard Bathroom Sizes in Vancouver
- Full bathroom (5×8 or 5×9): Most common in 1960s–1990s homes. Toilet, vanity, shower/tub combo
- Powder room (2.5×5): Toilet and small sink only
- 3/4 bathroom (5×7): Toilet, vanity, walk-in shower (no tub)
- Master ensuite (8×10 or larger): Separate shower, soaker tub, double vanity
Layout Rules of Thumb
- Toilet placement: Minimum 15″ from centre to side wall/vanity, 21″ clearance in front
- Shower minimum: 36″x36″ (32″x32″ allowed by code, but tight)
- Walk-in shower: 36″x48″ comfortable, 36″x60″ preferred
- Double vanity: 60–72″ wide, requires at least 60″ of wall space
- Soaker tub: 60″x32″ standard, requires 60″ minimum floor run
Cost Impact of Layout Changes
Same-location renovation (no plumbing moves): $15,000–$35,000. Moving one drain or fixture: adds $1,500–$4,000. Moving all plumbing (full layout change): adds $5,000–$15,000 to the base renovation cost.
