BC Contractor Licensing: What You Need to Know as a Homeowner
Contractor Licensing in British Columbia
BC does not have a mandatory general contractor licence for renovation work on existing residential properties — which surprises many homeowners. However, specific trades require licences, and other protections exist.
What IS Required in BC
- Electrical work: Licensed electrical contractor (Technical Safety BC Class A or B licence)
- Plumbing work: Licensed plumber (BC Certificate of Qualification)
- Gas work: Licensed gasfitter (Class A or B)
- New construction: Licensed residential builder under the Homeowner Protection Act
- WorkSafeBC registration: Required for all construction businesses with workers
What Is NOT Federally Required
- General contractor licence for renovation of existing buildings
- Interior design or renovation project management licence
Vancouver-Specific Business Licensing
Many Metro Vancouver cities require a City of Vancouver Business Licence, Burnaby Business Licence, etc. for contractors working within their borders. Check with your city.
How to Verify a Contractor
- Request WorkSafeBC clearance at wcb.bc.ca (free)
- For electrical/plumbing: ask for licence number and verify with TSBC
- Check BBB (Better Business Bureau) for complaints
- Request Certificate of Insurance naming you as additional insured
- Check Google, HomeStars, Yelp for reviews
