Renovation Contractor vs. Interior Designer in Vancouver: Who Manages Your Project? (2026)
Many Vancouver homeowners are confused about the difference between a renovation contractor and an interior designer — and who should manage their project. The roles are distinct, frequently overlap, and can work together or independently depending on the project type. Here’s a clear breakdown.
What a Renovation Contractor Does
A general contractor manages and executes construction — structural work, mechanical rough-in, framing, drywall, flooring, cabinetry installation, and the physical build of the project. The contractor is responsible for: obtaining building permits, co-ordinating licensed trades (plumber, electrician, tiler), managing the construction schedule, ensuring code compliance, and delivering a completed, inspected project.
Most contractors can provide design input and help with material selection, but design is not their primary training. Design-build contractors like VGC have in-house design capability and develop permit-ready drawings as part of the project service.
What an Interior Designer Does
An interior designer focuses on spatial planning, material selection, finishes, lighting, furniture, and the aesthetic experience of the space. Interior designers in BC can be Registered Interior Designers (member of IDIBC) with formal education and credentials, or general “design consultants” without formal credentials — the title isn’t legally protected in BC.
Registered Interior Designers can prepare documents required for permits (space planning, interior finishes) but typically cannot prepare the structural drawings required for building permits — that’s the role of an architect or structural engineer.
When Do You Need Both?
For complex, large-scale renovations where aesthetic outcome is paramount — a whole-home renovation, luxury kitchen, or custom home — working with both a designer (for aesthetics and space planning) and a contractor (for execution and permits) delivers the best result. For most standard renovations, a design-build contractor provides sufficient design capability without the additional cost and complexity of a separate designer relationship.
VGC’s design-build service includes in-house design support for all projects. Contact us to discuss your project.
