Final Building Inspection Process in BC: What to Expect 2025
The Final Building Inspection in BC
The final building inspection closes out your permit and confirms all work meets BC Building Code. Understanding what inspectors look for helps ensure your renovation passes the first time.
What Building Inspectors Check
Structural
- All structural work completed per approved drawings
- Beam connections and hardware installed correctly
- Handrails on all stairs per code
Electrical
- TSBC electrical inspection already completed (inspector views certificate)
- All electrical boxes covered with appropriate plates
Plumbing
- All fixtures installed, no leaks
- Proper venting (no drain gurgling)
- Floor drains in mechanical rooms
Life Safety
- Smoke alarms interconnected on each floor
- CO detectors adjacent to sleeping areas (if gas appliances)
- Egress windows in all sleeping rooms
- Fire separation complete (if secondary suite)
Scheduling Your Final Inspection
Book inspection through your city’s online portal at least 2–3 business days in advance. Inspector visits: 30–60 minutes typically. If work passes, permit is closed. If work fails, deficiencies noted — re-inspection booked after corrections.
