Renovation Noise Bylaws in Vancouver: Hours, Rules & Neighbour Relations
Vancouver Renovation Noise Rules
Construction noise complaints are one of the most common issues during Vancouver renovations. Understanding the bylaws — and maintaining good neighbour relations — makes your project go smoother and avoids fines and stop-work orders.
City of Vancouver Construction Hours
Under Vancouver’s Noise Control By-law 6555, construction noise is permitted:
- Monday–Friday: 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM
- Saturday: 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Sunday and Statutory Holidays: No construction noise permitted
Violations can result in fines up to $10,000. Repeat violations can lead to stop-work orders.

Practical Tips for Neighbour Relations
- Introduce yourself and notify neighbours before work starts — ideally 2 weeks in advance
- Provide your contractor’s contact number for direct communication
- Give an honest timeline and keep neighbours updated on particularly noisy phases
- Ensure dumpsters are placed so they don’t block driveways or sightlines
- Protect shared fences, landscaping, and driveways from construction damage
