Retaining Wall Cost Vancouver 2025: Construction & Repair

Retaining Wall Costs in Metro Vancouver

Retaining walls are common on Vancouver’s hillside lots and sloped properties. They prevent soil erosion, create usable flat areas, and can dramatically improve a property’s curb appeal and function.

Retaining Wall Cost by Material

Material Cost per linear ft 50 ft wall (3 ft high)
Pressure-treated timber $40–$80/lf $2,000–$4,000
Interlocking block (Allan, Unilock) $60–$120/lf $3,000–$6,000
Natural stone (dry-stack) $80–$160/lf $4,000–$8,000
Poured concrete $120–$250/lf $6,000–$12,500
Gabion (stone-filled wire) $70–$130/lf $3,500–$6,500

Permit Requirement

Most Metro Vancouver cities require a building permit for retaining walls over 1.2m (4 ft) in height. Taller walls or walls on slopes require a geotechnical report and engineered drawings.

Drainage Is Critical

All retaining walls must have proper drainage (gravel backfill + perforated drain pipe) to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup — the #1 cause of retaining wall failure in Vancouver’s rainy climate.
